It’s been awhile. Things have been so busy at the café and at home that I’ve neglected everything else besides work and family, and it’s starting to get to me. We’re taking on more baking in house, which I love, but it means a lot more work for all of us. Andrea, one of our fearless leaders, has really taken on the brunt of it, but the rest of us are getting our hands sticky with her. It’s been fun troubleshooting and sharing ideas, as well as dredging up old recipes and techniques from my days doing pastry and bread, and it’s moments like those that really make me appreciate having worked in so many aspects of the kitchen. It has given me a really well rounded education as a cook, though I’m constantly learning, and sometimes relearning things every day. All in all, this time has really made us at the café band together as more of a team, and thus, the missed sleep (and exercise) is worth it if we can bring that to you. Thanks for sticking with us, and we’ll continue to strive toward our best. See you in the morning.

Happy Holidays
12/18/08
Mike and I are heading out to the coast for the holiday, and I’m looking forward to recharging my batteries over games of Parcheesi (my favorite game—the game of revenge), long walks on the frozen beach and sleeping in, a well deserved luxury, if I do say so myself. I’ve never been a morning person, and have been known to throw a few poorly aimed punches at my siblings in the past, so find it more than ironic that my favorite meal to cook and eat is breakfast, with lunch being a close second. I like the “everyman” aspect of these meals and look forward to cooking them in my pajamas as close to the fireplace as possible. It will be nice to cook some things I rarely get to use: razor clams, maybe some crab. In my effort to keep things relatively inexpensive for our clientele at the Daily I don’t get to offer these items (how does half a razor clam sound?), but snatch them up whenever I can. Luckily for our customers though, a much needed break will give me a chance to clear my head and come at the menu with a fresh outlook on things and hopefully some new ideas. I can’t wait to get to Oysterville for some of the obvious, and we always pass a few little fish markets on our drives around Long Beach. One summer we caught a hand painted sign that read “fresh crab” out of the corner of our eyes, immediately pulled to the side of the road and picked out that night’s dinner. “Pinchy” as we affectionately called him was delicious in Mike’s cioppino, and it was a lot of fun watching the dog try to figure out what he was.
Well, as I bundle up here during “Arctic Blast 2008”, I’m already in the cabin, visions of briny sugarplums dancing in my head. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday. Stay warm, and I’ll see you next year.
